Week 46… 2021!

Hope you are well, and having a great weekend. Lots happening in the world of Technology, and I appreciate the comments from many of you readers who reached out to me after my EV post recently, about affordable Electric Vehicles.

Back to this week – and in the news, you’ve guessed it… Tesla were in the news again! This time, people who try to unlock their car from their phone – were unable to! issues with the app… You see, If I am travelling further than 20mins from my home, I’ll carry the key card with me. Because, let’s be honest – I trust alot of tech – but when it comes to the car – and a phone – it’s usually safer to carry the key card, because you just never know! (It’s all working now by the way!!)

Now to my Top Two Tech Stories of the week…

  1. First up… Imagine a Robot pouring your drinks!

You got it – when you go to a pub or bar, if the staff are friendly and helpful it very much adds to your enjoyment of the experience.

By contrast, having to deal with a surly person serving up your pint or margarita it risks significantly reducing your happiness levels.

For people with a regular drinking establishment of choice, the person behind the bar can even become a friend and confidant. Or, as renowned Canadian economist, Harry Gordon Johnson once said: “The greatest accomplishment of a bartender lies in his ability to exactly suit his customer.”

Soon, however, those bar staff might not even be human. Enter Cecilia, a robotic bartender that mixes and serves cocktails, and uses artificial intelligence (AI) to talk to customers in much the same way that Alexa, on an Amazon Echo speaker, or Siri, on an iPhone can respond to you.

The unit looks a bit like a tall fruit machine, only with an animated female barmaid – Cecilia – appearing on a large, upright video screen. You either tell her what cocktail you want, or order it on the below touch-screen, and pay for the drink by tapping your bank card or phone.

Your cocktail is then mixed and made inside the machine, and dispensed into a glass at the vending slot.

“Cecilia works on voice recognition and AI technology,” says Elad Kobi, chief executive of the Israeli firm behind the technology – Cecilia.AI. “She can chat to customers, and when they choose a specific cocktail, she can make it, live.”

The company says that each unit can be filled with 70 litres of different types of spirits, and that it can serve up to 120 cocktails per hour. At least if customers don’t stay for extended chats.

The firm first released the robot on 24 February of this year – World Bartender Day. Since then it has already been used at corporate events held by Microsoft, accountancy group KPMG, and tech firm Cisco.

Customers can either buy a Cecilia for $45,000 (£34,000), or hire one for $2,000 a month.

Mr Kobi believes that the traditionally change-resistant pubs and bars sector may increasingly turn to such technology in a bid to “wow” customers, and to stand out from the crowd.

Now… several years ago, I worked in partnership with Middlesex University to develop such a robot. We had some success – the sticking point for us was opening a glass bottle of coke. However, back then, when I was leading Innovation, it was brilliant to have a robot pour the perfect drink. The cost was another major hinderance – to have this in many bars. But glad to see you can hire one for $2,000 a month!

2. Sticking to Robots, Alphabet using Robots to clean up!

What does Google’s parent company Alphabet want with robots? Well, it would like them to clean up around the office, for a start.

The company announced today that its Everyday Robots Project — a team within its experimental X labs dedicated to creating “a general-purpose learning robot” — has moved some of its prototype machines out of the lab and into Google’s Bay Area campuses to carry out some light custodial tasks.

“We are now operating a fleet of more than 100 robot prototypes that are autonomously performing a range of useful tasks around our offices,” said Everyday Robot’s chief robot officer Hans Peter Brøndmo in a blog post. “The same robot that sorts trash can now be equipped with a squeegee to wipe tables and use the same gripper that grasps cups can learn to open doors.”

These robots in question are essentially arms on wheels, with a multipurpose gripper on the end of a flexible arm attached to a central tower. There’s a “head” on top of the tower with cameras and sensors for machine vision and what looks like a spinning lidar unit on the side, presumably for navigation.

As Brøndmo indicates, these bots were first seen sorting out recycling when Alphabet debuted the Everyday Robot team in 2019. The big promise that’s being made by the company (as well as by many other startups and rivals) is that machine learning will finally enable robots to operate in “unstructured” environments like homes and offices.

Right now, we’re very good at building machines that can carry out repetitive jobs in a factory, but we’re stumped when trying to get them to replicate simple tasks like cleaning up a kitchen or folding laundry.

Think about it: you may have seen robots from Boston Dynamics performing backflips and dancing to The Rolling Stones, but have you ever seen one take out the trash? It’s because getting a machine to manipulate never-before-seen objects in a novel setting (something humans do every day) is extremely difficult. This is the problem Alphabet wants to solve.

So there you go… my Top Two Tech Stories of the week… all about Robots. Are they really taking over…..?

Save with Tech

So, we know that food prices are rising, cost of gas is on the increase, etc… and I’ve been asked, what tech is out there that can help!

Well, there’s quite a few things.

But I’ll share two today. One related to food. The other one for gas.

There’s an app I’ve had on my phone for a while. Used it a few times. It’s call, Too Good To Go.

Basically – those food related businesses who have food left over, put it on the app – that there’s food available, and rather than it being the ‘normal’ price, it’s heavily discounted! You just reserve the one you want, and it’s as easy as that!

You can get magic bags (so basically, the business won’t know what they have – but will have something!) or you can get specific items that the business knows are available towards end of the day (as they know they’ll not get all the customers they want and won’t sell out).

I love this app. For two reasons. One – We need to reduce food waste. Every year, one-third of food if thrown away. We can reduce this waste. And Too Good To Go does just that. Helps to reduce the amount of food that is thrown away.

There’s a few other apps similar to this, that help fight food waste. And others that offer discounts etc… but this one is great – feedback is good and it’s one that I’ve kept a close eye on.

Up Next – Heating!

Which is the Best Smart Thermostat? Comparison Table

Gas prices are rising. And to be honest, not alot we can currently do about it. However – what we can do is what control the amount of heating we have on.

Now, if you haven’t already – get a smart thermostat.

Why?

  1. Smart thermostats let you control your heating from your phone/mobile device. In that way, you can set when the heating should come on and when it should be off – that way allowing you to only have heating on when you are at home.
  2. They will learn your behaviours – some can work with weather conditions – so they know when it’s cold, you may want it to be a degree or two higher than normal.
  3. Link this – with a smart meter, you can see how much gas and electricity you are actually using – and then made adaptions as required. For example, switch of lights, unplug devices, be more clever when you charge items…

Data. I’ve spoken about it before – use the data you have to help you. Data such as, how much you are paying per kwh and then see if you can get it cheaper elsewhere. Data such as, how much you’re actually using and how does it compare to others in your area – for example, do others have lower bills and then, find out why? – some may have loft insulation, some cavity wall insulation, etc.. might be worth investing in some of those.

At the end of the day, you can only control what you can control… gas prices, unfortunately you can’t control. However, your thermostat is something you can control – and something (being smart) can help you!

Week 37… 2021!

Apparently, there’s only 100 (approx) days left for Christmas! I have to admit, do love Christmas time… mistletoe and wine. But first… we have our autumn to enjoy, the leaves to sweep up and get those hoodies out!

Heads up! – Tonight, I’ll be on BBC Radio Nottingham, just after 7pm, talking all things tech. It’s a regular thing, every few month I do, to keep the local community updated and informed about tech things that matter to them.

And with that, here’s my Top Two Tech Stories This week!

  1. Update those Apple Devices!

Apple’s iOS 14.8 was released on Monday, and the small update contains a big security fix. The latest version of Apple’s mobile operating system repairs a vulnerability reportedly exploited by invasive spyware called Pegasus that can potentially turn on your phone’s camera and microphone, and record messages, texts, emails and calls. (Though the odds of your iPhone or iPad being infected are low, you can still check to make sure your phone is not infected with Pegasus spyware!)

While iOS 14.7 brought some useful new features like MagSafe battery pack support for the iPhone 12 and managing timers on your HomePod, iOS 14.8 is just a security fix. It arrives right before iOS 15 is generally available to download on Monday, Sept. 20

So, even if you are thinking about updating to iOS15, suggest you get the security fix in as soon as possible.

2. Sir Clive Sinclair passes away

Inventor Sir Clive Sinclair, who popularised the home computer and invented the pocket calculator, has died at his London home aged 81.

His daughter Belinda Sinclair said he passed away on Thursday morning after having cancer for more than a decade.

Sir Clive’s products included the ZX series of computers and his ill-fated C5 electric vehicle.

He was still working on his inventions last week “because that was what he loved doing”, said Ms Sinclair.

“He was inventive and imaginative and for him it was exciting and an adventure, it was his passion,” she added.

His ZX Spectrum computers brought affordable personal computing to the masses – selling in their millions across the world.

However, in a BBC interview in 2013, Sir Clive revealed he did not, at that time, use computers himself.

“I don’t like distraction,” he explained.

“If I had a computer, I’d start thinking I could change this and that, and I don’t want to. My wife very kindly looks after that for me.”

Let’s put it simply like this – he was definitely ahead of his time.

There you go for this week. RIP Sir Clive Sinclair and update your Apple devices!

Week 34… 2021!

A lot happened this week! – So much so… I was tempted to share more than two stories, but no… we have a process and the process shall be followed, because expectations may rise, variation is not good…

So let’s get straight into it… here’s my Top Two Tech Stories of the Week!

  1. First up, we have a German company, that’s created a road where it’ll charge electric vehicles!!

Indiana (US) may very well be the primary state to have a wi-fi charging street that tops up your electrical automobile as you drive alongside it.

Because the 21st century rolls on, we’ve all had these one or two moments the place we see some new expertise and the tempo of innovation actually comes residence to roost in our heads, usually with some recollection of Star Wars or Star Trek.

Perhaps for some it might have been the self-driving characteristic of the Tesla, or good residence methods, however for motorists in Indiana, that second could come by means of a shiny new wi-fi street.

Whereas battery charging instances are getting better every year, it’s nonetheless essentially the most limiting issue relating to the acquisition of an EV. The Indiana Division of Transportation (INDOT) has determined to sort out that by burying electrified wire coils that create a magnetic subject alongside the street floor, mimicking the best way wi-fi charging stations for tablets and telephones are designed.

As a way to use the roads, vehicles can be fitted with a receiver coil to choose up the cost as they go alongside, and turning into magnetized, draw electrical energy from the coils themselves. How awesome is that!

2. Up next… 12 year old makes £290,000 from NFT’s!

A 12-year-old boy from London has made about £290,000 during the school holidays, after creating a series of pixelated artworks called Weird Whales and selling non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

With NFTs, artwork can be “tokenised” to create a digital certificate of ownership that can be bought and sold – you may remember this from a previous blog post of mine.

They do not generally give the buyer the actual artwork or its copyright.

Benyamin Ahmed is keeping his earnings in the form of Ethereum – the crypto-currency in which they were sold.

This means they could go up or down in value and there is no back-up from the authorities if the digital wallet in which he is holding them is hacked or compromised.

He has never had a traditional bank account! Crazy – right?!

“It was a little bit of a fun exercise – but I picked up on really early that they were really receptive to it and they were really good,” Imran said.

“So then we started getting a little bit more serious – and now it’s every single day… but you can’t cram this stuff, you can’t say I’m going to learn coding in three months.”

The boys did 20 or 30 minutes of coding exercises a day – including on holiday, he said.

So there you go… a 12yr old who’s made £290,000 from NFT’s and wireless charging for electric cars!

Week 23… 2021!

So on Friday, the Euro’s (Football) kicked off! Whilst I’m not going to go into the matches, how well Italy played etc… one thing that caught my eye was the little remote controlled car that brought the football to the ref at the start!

It was all because VW are the sponsors – and with their new range of ID (electric) cars, what a perfect way to get the message across! (In my opinion – great bit of marketing and advertising!)

With that… let’s speed up, and drive onto our Top Two Tech Stories of the week!

  1. First up… Facebook and their Smartwatch!

Rumors of Facebook’s development of a smart watch have been around for a few months, but recent stories have given use more details on the project. The watch, allegedly planned for summer 2022, is said to feature two cameras – one forward-facing, for video calls, and a second on the back.

The idea is that the unit can be easily removed from the wrist and used in much the same way as a phone camera. The images can then be uploaded straight to either Facebook, Instagram or shared on WhatsApp. Either through your phone’s connection or using an eSIM.

The Facebook watch is due to feature a heart rate monitor and fitness features to rival the likes of Apple and the now Google-owned Fitbit. Rather than being a premium device, it is expected to retail around $400 (£282/AU$516) and comes in a choice of black, white or gold.

2. Up next.. flying taxi service from Virgin!

Virgin Atlantic is exploring whether it could launch a flying taxi service as part of a partnership with Bristol-based Vertical Aerospace.

The airline suggests electric vertical take-off and landing vehicles (eVTOL) could fly from towns to major airports.

Vertical Aerospace is conducting test flights of its aircraft this year and continue to test to see if the idea, can in reality, take off.

It has proposed that an eVTOL aircraft could pick people up from a city such as Cambridge and fly them to a major airport such as London Heathrow.

Vertical Aerospace says its VA-X4 craft will be able to carry four passengers and a pilot up to 100 miles, as well as being emissions-free and quieter than a helicopter.

In fact the company claims it will be “near silent” when cruising and it has already partnered with American Airlines and Avolon, an aircraft-leasing company.

So there you go – my Top Tech Stories from the week. All about Facebook moving into hardware and bringing out their first SmartWatch… on which you can take photos, and secondly – flying taxis… not a new idea, but one that’s fast becoming more of a reality!

Week 17… 2021!

And just like that, April is over… and Hello May! Now who’s hoping for some hot weather? – Yes, me too!! It’s not been as warm as last year, so the sooner it warms up, the better.

Now, lets get straight into my Top Two Tech Stories of the week…

  1. Electric Highways on our Highways! – Well, ok – we call them Motorways over on this side of the pond.

Now we know rules will change in 2030 – and we’ll anticipate over the coming years and increase in electric cars.

That’s why, Ecotricity and Gridserve have opened the UK motorway network’s largest high-powered EV charging station, kick-starting the their Electric Highway joint initiate.

It’s over in Rugby, and according to the firms, these chargers have the capacity to add up to 200 miles of electric range in around 10 minutes. They offer all three connection types – CCS, Type 2 AC and Chademo – and accept contactless card payment.

A further 12 chargers will be added to the Rugby site at a later date, as part of the partnership between the two firms. This is exactly the type of infrastructure motorists want to see, and fill them with confidence!

2. Now, it’s Bank Holiday Weekend here in the UK… and we’ve got some sales taking place!

For those who’d like to go touch, physical see some items before buying – Currys/PC World has launched some big savings for the May Bank Holiday weekend, with 4K and 8K TVs, Apple iPhones and more getting price cuts.

Now, whilst there are price cuts – please please please – do your research. Check on-line where it is the cheapest. Look at warranties etc… and above all, check, is it worth the upgrade/reason why you’re buying.

Mobile phone technology advances a lot year on year – but being honest, some of the older models work absolutely fine depending on your reasons for use – if it’s simple social media etc… then some older models are absolutely fine. However, if you’re reading this and thinking… well Bal, I want to treat myself…. then YES! Go for it! You should… But again (do your research first!!).

Speaking about the latest Currys promotion Ed Connolly, chief commercial officer at Dixons Carphone, said: “Our Epic Deals event give customers a chance to upgrade their home tech, and with the amazing prices on offer across this bank holiday weekend, there has never been a better time to shop.”

Connolly went on to add: “The Epic Deals event comes as we’ve been opening stores across the nation over the past three weeks, and we’ve seen customers come to our stores to find amazing tech and advice from our colleagues. We also understand that not everyone will feel comfortable returning to our stores just yet, so customers can continue to access to our amazing colleagues via our digital ShopLive service and Order & Collect.”

So there you have my Top Two Tech Stories… from better infrastructure of charging your electric car, to treating yourself this weekend on some tech goodies!

Tech Tuesday

Yesterday, on the BBC News website, they had an interesting story. It was all about the lack of ‘Digital Skills’.

Here’s a link to the full story – https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-56479304

Now, I’ve been talking about this for a while. The type of skills that are required for the future need to be started and worked on now!

In September 2019, the Manufacturer shared the below…

Cyber Security – 33%!

Digital Business Transformation – 25%!

Unfortunately, we’ve not really moved the needle on many of these!

So what do we need to do? – Well… as the above illustration shows… Firstly… Training! Train folk in these topics! – then let them learn, experience and grow that skill.

Back in 2018 (early), I started to learn alot about GDPR. I learnt alot about data, privacy, etc… Today, I’m pulled up and asked questions on these topics! – Literally! – Only yesterday someone was asking me about an application and the impact of the data being stored outside of the EU!

Digital Business Transformation – is a skill that many should be learning. Businesses should be able to transform – and this skill is essential! Like the saying goes… ‘it’s not the strongest that survive, but those adaptable to change’.

We’ve seen the devastating impact Covid has had on a number of businesses.

We’ve also seen the growth opportunity Covid has provided a number of businesses.

Which are you? Devastating Impact or Growth Opportunity?

To Grow – you need skills. The right skills. Digital Skills.

We are moving from Physical to Digital. Where are you on the journey?

Tech Tuesday!

We are all aware of the main social media platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram…. the younger ones amongst us… Tik Tok, Snapchat, etc… Let’s be honest, there’s a fair few. But there’s one that’s taking the world by storm!

Clubhouse.

So imagine, in the real world, you’re at a conference. It’s a conference that has several rooms, several speakers. You look at the agenda, and highlight what interests you. You then go to the room, sit in the room and listen to the speaker(s). When you want to leave, you leave quietly, and you can join another room – where they may be talking about another interest of yours – and you sit there and listen to the speakers.

Now… Clubhouse, has all this… on an app. You can connect and follow people who you think are interesting, and when they start a room – you’ll be notified. And off course, people can follow you!

You can even create your own room! Have people join. Talk about what you want! You can make it private or keep it open for others to join.

I’ve been using it for a while. And I have to admit. I love it. I think it’s great. I’ve had my own room (where a few of us talked about football – in particular Nottingham Forest). I’ve joined lots of rooms, and listened – and like most things, some were good, some… not so.

On iOS only for the moment – but i’m sure they’ll be bringing it out on Android soon. Oh.. and you need to be invited. That’s right – it’s invite only… But when you sign up and wait – if people on the platform know you, then they can ‘let you in’. In addition, you get two invites to invite your friends!

Why is clubhouse so important?

  1. It’s all audio! – so you can carry on with your normal tasks, plug in your headphones – and off you go. The rise of podcasts has shown that more and more people are wanting to listen.
  2. Clubhouse says they do not record and store. So the room you create, the room you talk in… none of that conversation is stored so you can listen to it later. It’s all ‘real-time’. Like a real conference, where you’d listen to a person live… it’s exactly like that.

There are some watch outs though… whilst Clubhouse say they don’t record anything, some security folk found that they they will capture some of your personal data and information. So like all social media platforms, enjoy… (but be conscious of who’s watching.. or in this case, listening!)

Week 2… 2021!

It’s all happening isn’t it! – But first things first, my apologies for not sharing my Friday Thought. I had a really busy week, and whilst I plan a lot of things, I just didn’t have enough time to get to releasing my Friday Thought.

But on a positive! – I’m on my second review of the week!!

  1. What’s WhatsApp? – That’s right!! This could be the norm in a few years. So…. WhatsApp released new ‘conditions’ if you want to keep using their platform. As you may know, they are part of the Facebook group – and whilst your messages are encrypted end to end, they want to gather some other data about you – and share it. Now for them, it’s all about the experience, but many have become scared, thought it’s violating their privacy and started to switch to Signal and Telegram. Whilst I’m not going to tell you what to do… there’s some great articles out there – and if you do want me to tell you what to do… WhatsApp me!
  2. China wants to build its own $306 billion use car market from scratch! Basically, they want to double the value of secondhand vehicle sales by 2025. Now China already has more then 270 million vehicles on it’s road… and estimated 15 million secondhand models were sold in 2019! Put some contrast on it… 173 people out of 1000 in China own a car… comparing that to the US, it’s 837. You can be sure to say, it’s all happening in China… wonder if the authors of AutoTrader are reading this?!

So here’s my top two stories of the week… I reckon it’s going to be a busy year, lots happening!! – and I’ll share my review of the week (or please get in touch with a better name!).

If you have any top stories to share – get in touch, or if there’s a particular topic you’d like me to share the latest on – happy to do so!

Till next week… stay safe, and take care!

Tech to help with Mental Health

With a new lockdown on the horizon – many cities, like England’s second biggest city, Birmingham, is going into a ‘lockdown’ from Tuesday.

I appreciate this will have a huge affect on many folks mental health.

There’s many people who have been isolating and not going out…. there’s many who have been sensible, and there’s many who have no choice but to go to work/school, etc… however there’s been an increase in new cases, and therefore new measures are coming in place to control the spread of Covid-19.

Now – one area that is being talked about is mental health.

It’s not easy. If you’re at home. Not in your usual environment – talking, and meeting people (this includes family and friends).

To be able to talk – can be difficult. However, there is technology that can help you.

Introducing you to Replika. An AI (Artificial Companion) that will talk to you, get to know you and talk to you.

That’s right. Whenever you wish to talk – you open the app and start to text away. They’ll learn about you over time, and the Intelligence will be able to converse with you – like a good friend!

Now – nothing can replace the real conversation with real people – but technology is advancing so quick – that AI is able to learn about you, hold a conversation and ensure you’re ok.

It’s important to talk – and thoroughly recommend, if new measures are introduced in your area or community – please do look after your mental health.
