Send me that file…

At work, most of us are probably used to Google or Microsoft for saving and sharing files.

At work, we don’t really have a choice to what we use. But at home, this could be a different story. Cost can play a major factor because at work, companies can get enterprise licenses due to the number of people using the software, what they’re doing with the software, etc..

For home office users it’s slightly different and however we still need a solution that offers a convenient and secure way to store, access, and share files from anywhere with an internet connection. But with so many options available, how do you choose the best cloud storage service for your needs?

Here are some factors to consider when selecting a cloud storage provider:

Storage Capacity

  • How much storage do you need? Consider the size of your files and how frequently you need to access them.
  • Does the provider offer scalable plans? This can be helpful if your storage needs grow over time.

Security

  • What security measures are in place? Look for providers that offer encryption, two-factor authentication, and regular backups.
  • Is the provider compliant with relevant data protection regulations? This can be important if you handle sensitive information.

Features

  • What features do you need? Consider whether you need file sharing, version history, or integration with other productivity tools.

Cost

  • What is the pricing structure? Compare the cost per storage unit, as well as any additional fees for features or bandwidth.
  • Are there any free options available? While free plans may have limitations, they can be a good starting point for light users.

Popular Cloud Storage Providers for Home Office Users

  • Google Drive: Offers seamless integration with Google Workspace and a generous free storage plan.
  • Dropbox: A popular choice with a user-friendly interface and strong security features.
  • Microsoft OneDrive: Integrates with Microsoft Office 365 and offers a variety of collaboration features.
  • pCloud: Known for its privacy and security focus, with end-to-end encryption and a lifetime subscription option.
  • Sync.com: Offers a secure and private cloud storage solution with a focus on simplicity and ease of use.

Ultimately, the best cloud storage service for you will depend on your specific needs and preferences. By carefully considering the factors outlined above, you can choose a provider that offers the right combination of storage capacity, security, features, and cost.

Eye care and Screens

I shared in my last blog post about my new monitor and why I needed one.

Well, one of the reasons was, the new one has something called blue-light filter. It helps my eyes.

I’m on the computer alot. I’m looking at my monitor alot. And deep down, I know all of this is not good for my eyes.

This got me thinking about our eyes because in today’s world, our eyes are constantly bombarded with screens. From smartphones and computers to tablets and TVs, we spend countless hours staring at digital displays. While these devices have revolutionized our lives, they can also have a significant impact on our ocular health. It’s essential to prioritize eye care to protect our vision and prevent potential problems.

The Dangers of Excessive Screen Time

  • Digital Eye Strain: Prolonged screen exposure can lead to symptoms like fatigue, blurred vision, dry eyes, headaches, and difficulty focusing.
  • Sleep Disturbances: The blue light emitted by screens can interfere with our body’s natural sleep-wake cycle, making it harder to fall asleep and stay asleep.
  • Long-Term Eye Problems: Excessive screen time has been linked to an increased risk of myopia (nearsightedness) and other vision issues, particularly in children and young adults.

The Impact of Blue Light

Blue light, a type of visible light emitted by digital devices, can penetrate deeper into the eye than other wavelengths. While it’s essential for regulating our circadian rhythm, excessive exposure can disrupt our sleep patterns and contribute to eye strain.

Tips for Protecting Your Eyes

  • Take Regular Breaks: Every 20 minutes, look away from your screen and focus on an object 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
  • Adjust Screen Settings: Reduce the brightness and contrast of your device, and use a blue light filter or night mode.
  • Wear Blue Light Blocking Glasses: These glasses can help reduce the amount of blue light that reaches your eyes.
  • Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle: Ensure you get enough sleep, eat a balanced diet, and exercise regularly.
  • See an Eye Doctor Regularly: Schedule regular eye exams to monitor your vision and detect any potential problems early on.

By following these tips and prioritizing eye care, you can help protect your vision and enjoy a healthier, more comfortable digital experience. Remember, your eyes are precious, so treat them well!

Bal’s got a new monitor

Recently, I bought a new monitor.

I needed one.

The old one was… well, old! Very old. I’d had it for about 8 years+ and with technology that’s moved on so much, I thought I’d get a new one. One that is better for my eyes, one that is slightly bigger (so I can see more of my excel!) and one that looks a little cooler (the old one had a thick frame around the outside of the screen!).

So, this also got me thinking, what other tech should I consider for my home office…

1. Ergonomic Furniture and Accessories

  • Standing desks: Promote better posture and reduce back pain.
  • Ergonomic chairs: Provide optimal support for your back and neck.
  • Wrist rests: Prevent carpal tunnel syndrome and reduce wrist strain.

2. Noise-Canceling Headphones

  • Focus and productivity: Block out distractions and create a quiet workspace.
  • Wireless options: Offer freedom of movement and comfort.

3. Dual Monitors

  • Increased productivity: View multiple documents or applications simultaneously.
  • Improved multitasking: Streamline your workflow and reduce switching between tasks.

4. Smart Home Devices

  • Voice assistants: Control your home environment with simple voice commands.
  • Smart thermostats: Optimize heating and cooling for energy efficiency.
  • Smart lighting: Adjust lighting to suit your mood and productivity levels.

5. Video Conferencing Tools

  • High-quality cameras and microphones: Ensure clear and professional video calls.
  • Background blur or replacement: Create a professional and distraction-free backdrop.

6. Cloud Storage

  • Access files from anywhere: Store and access your documents, photos, and videos securely.
  • Collaboration: Share files and collaborate with colleagues in real time.

7. Productivity Apps

  • Task management: Organize your workload and track progress.
  • Time tracking: Monitor your productivity and identify time-wasters.
  • Note-taking: Capture ideas, meeting notes, and research findings.

8. Eye Care Solutions

  • Blue light-blocking glasses: Reduce eye strain and fatigue.
  • Eye rest breaks: Incorporate regular breaks to give your eyes a rest.

By incorporating these technologies into your home office setup, you can enhance your productivity, comfort, and overall work experience. And I’ll do a deeper dive into some of these in my future blog posts.

Goodbye Eon

So, I’ve decided to move energy supplier.

Goodbye Eon. For the past 5 years it’s been… well, ok. We got on. You supplied me with my energy. I said thank you and paid you for it. It was good. Until…

Eon Next…

So, two things – 1) My Fixed tariff comes to an end and 2) Prices go up next month!

So, naturally – 1) I want to go on a Fixed tariff and 2) keep my bills as low as possible for as long as possible.

Eon – whom are now moving to be known as Eon Next, have a tariff I want but can’t. That’s because I’m an existing Eon customer. I have to wait to be migrated over to Eon Next. Which can take anything up to six months. Something, ideally, I don’t want to do.

So naturally, I went onto to some comparison sites – spoke to some friends – and found another energy supplier with a tariff that works for me!

I rang Eon back. As you would in any relationship. Asking – can you do anything before I move. No, sorry sir, we can’t.

Ok. So rang up the new supplier and initiated the move. Takes 17 days.

Today, I had a call from Eon.

“Hello Mr Bansal, I’m speaking from Eon. We believe you are leaving us, is that righ?”

“Hello, yes – that is correct”

“Can I ask why you are leaving?”

“You can, but it’s all on the notes – I’m sure you’ve read them before calling me, right?”

“No. I haven’t. Can you tell me why you’re leaving?”

“Well, again – I could – but I’ve made a few calls to Eon prior to leaving – so it’s all detailed there”.

“Ok. To log onto your account – will need to run through some personal security questions….”

“No. You’ve rang me. I don’t know who you are. Yes you know I’m leaving you – but that’s it. I’m not giving you any of my personal details.”

“Ok. In that case, Goodbye”.

And the Eon lady hung up the phone.

If I really mattered as a customer – I’m sure, you could’ve easily gone off script, I’m sure you could have easily accessed my account prior to me calling, I’m sure you know that most people are not going to give you/answer security questions when you’ve rang them (due to the number of scams that take place – where people are phishing for information), I’m sure…. there’s a lot more I could add here.

Many businesses will lose customers – and I’ve said it before, use the data you have to talk to the customers – understand their needs and do what you can. Keep your current customers as close as possible as you can to you. It’s these customers that will either talk positively about you… or not.

In this case, if Eon had said, we’ll put you on a priority list and move you as soon as possible – within a month, or something along those lines – I could have potentially stayed.

So, with that… it’s Goodbye Eon.

(Should I be naming them? – Good question… don’t get me wrong, I’m leaving on ok terms – who knows, could get back together one day – I just hope that a) Eon can learn from this, but moreso, b) other companies/organizations learn that your customers/people are the most important element)

Gadgets for Home Working…

Let’s be honest- there’s a few folk that are working from home during these testing times. And it’s not easy. You have children running around in the back, connectivity issues… and batteries running low when you have to join a conference call.

But Bal…. are there any gadgets that could be used to make it easier to work from home?

Yes, yes there are.

Firstly, I would recommend some good headphones. Preferably noise cancelling ones.

There’ll be a lot going on around you, behind you… and it can often make it difficult for you to concentrate on the task in hand. Therefore it’s important to be able to block out the background noise… and the best way is by having some really good headphones.

Jabra Evolve 75 UC Stereo Headset

Whilst there’s plenty on offer, I use the Jabra noise cancelling headphones. They work really well… but there’s alot of options out there. Other ones that have been recommended are the Bose Quiet Comfort Wireless Bluetooth headphones. It’s important to make sure they’re wireless. The last thing you want getting caught, is the wire.

Next up… wifi-extender.

Hands up… if you’ve been on a call, and you have ‘connectivity’ issues. That’s right – it’s always good to make sure you have a good connection. Best way with this is to ensure it reaches you! – so get a good wifi extender that extends the wifi to you and you stay connected.

TP-Link 300Mbps Wi-Fi Range Extender & Booster 2

Plenty available on amazon and other places – for me, try TP-Link N300…

Finally…. Coffee Mug Warmer.

Whilst this doesn’t sound like it’s an essential… you may find you’ll save time walking from the ‘home office’ to the kitchen for that cup of coffee. Doesn’t take alot of space up and it’ll ensure your coffee (or other hot beverage) remains hot for longer…. so you don’t need to spill the cold coffee, get up, boil the kettle, make another cup, etc…

Enter the Portal…

These truly are testing times! Though, what is good to see, is how everyone is trying to stay connected.

I did share in a previous blog post on how you can stay in touch with friends and family – the technology that is available via your mobile phone, tablets (iPads etc..) and computers. But recently, I was asked, what do you do if you don’t want to use your mobile phone or if you want a bigger screen?

Well… then you can either purchase the Portal by Facebook, or Echo Show by Amazon – both are what we call a ‘Smart Display’.

Now – whilst I could go through all the features of both – there is some simple things you need to know first – before making a decision.

Are your friends and family on Facebook? Do they use WhatsApp? Are you on Facebook and WhatsApp? Do you use Facebook Messenger?

If you answered Yes to the above – head over and get yourself the Portal by Facebook. If No – then the Amazon Echo Show is for you.

Now – I’m going to be honest, the Portal is great for video calling, staying in touch – and you can even use ‘Alexa’ commands with the Portal. If your primary goal is to stay in touch, have excellent video calling capabilities and use either Facebook or Whatsapp – this will be great for you.

Yes – you can use a tablet. Yes, you can get this all on an iPad (or something equivalent) but where the Portal is better is in sound and quality. Also there’s some additional features like the camera will follow you and stay focused on you, you don’t need to be holding the phone/tablet to your face as the Portal (not only looks nice) but sits nicely on any worktop, cabinet, table, surface at home.

Now – if you’re worried, oh… the camera will always be watching me… then guess what, you can always turn the camera off

Now… if you don’t use Facebook or WhatsApp or are just worried about Facebook collecting more information and data about you… (but being honest… everyone, everywhere is collecting data about you), then you can look at the Amazon Echo Show. It’s like the Echo… but with a display.

For video calling – the Show uses Skype. So you’ll have to make sure the person you’re calling has skype installed. From personally experience – and talking to friends (not on skype)… it’s not the best video calling platform out there – but it is an option.

So…. want a specific display for video calling, with better sound and video than your phone or tablet…. I would seriously think about the Portal.

Already got a display and want something you can plug into it? … then you can get a Portal that plugs into your TV!

The little device plugs into your TV… and makes the whole TV the display for you to see (and talk to) family and friends.

Again… privacy concerns are addressed…

A few options – to stay connected, stay safe and keep talking.

Smart Everything…

We’re now living in a world – that is progressively becoming smarter by the day… Smart Everything!

We have ‘smarter’ devices, ‘smarter’ homes and ‘smart’ cars (not those small 2 seater ones, though they are cool- I mean smart as in clever cars…)

We’re more connected than ever before also.

With the vast amount of data being analysed about us – its no coincidence that you google for a holiday to Cyprus and next minute when you’re looking or searching for something on a different platform – Cyprus holiday suggestions pop up!

Is it good or bad, Bal?

Well – it depends on how you want to look at it.

It’s good- because it makes life easy. simple. quick.

It’s bad – because there’s organisations out there that know alot about you. And I mean… A LOT! (probably more than what you know about yourself!)

I’m more optimistic. I’m fine with certain organisations knowing certain things about me – if it brings about value.

Value – the regard that something is held to deserve; the importance, worth, or usefulness of something.

To receive that ‘value’ – you need to input your information, data or something to receive something of value!

But obviously – be aware of what you share with who. Luckily, we have GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) to help you understand more about where your data is and what you’d like done with it.

But going back to Value – we underestimate what the value could be. In Lean – we are able to look at non-value add and value-add : which means, we look at a process and the steps which add value (to the overall outcome) and which ones don’t add value (to the overall outcome).

So we should know where our data is – how it’s being used – and is it delivering the value we’d like. If not – then question, why not – and who’s benefiting from that data.

Buying something I don’t need…

On LinkedIn, Tuesday morning – Dean posted this…

It’s true- people do.

On Tuesday – I had the day off (I know, right? – I actually put an Out Of Office on and took a day off!) – so, Tuesday…I decided to go to Ikea.

Now, many of you who go Ikea – will know, doesn’t matter what you aim to do – if it’s just looking, or you’ve done your research and know exactly what you want, you’ll always end up buying something that you think later… do I really need it?

So why does Ikea do this? – (and this blog post idea was created by my friend Raj, who mentioned the below….)

Well… so during my visit on Tuesday, I did wonder, a) what will I end up buying and b) there must be some science behind it!

Now, before I even entered the store – I knew what I wanted. I knew the exact items, etc… however, yes – like most folk, somehow… I’d ended up at the cashier till with not only the items I wanted to buy originally but some other nice ‘additions’ in the basket.

Now… couple of reasons when I did some research and looked into this…

  1. Children – or shall I say, ‘children-less’. That’s right, Ikea have Smaland – a place where you can leave the kids to be entertained and you go off to enjoy Ikea without the nagging, shouting, fighting… and ultimately thinking ‘hope my kid doesn’t break that’.
  2. Windows – Now, I’d heard about this previously – but it is kind of true! – There aren’t many windows once you are in the realm of Ikea. This means, you are isolated some-what in the Ikea World, and have no idea what time it is (obviously you can check your watch)… clocks on the wall don’t tell the real time – so being honest, you can literally spend hours…and hours…. and hours….
  3. List – I always thought it’s very kind of Ikea to provide you with pencils and the measuring guide…. oh, and the paper list (to write down what you want). Yep – there’s science behind that, once you write down what you want or thinking to get – you’re kind of making a commitment to purchase it. You’ll only write things down you want – and if you’re in two minds – chances are, once you’re written it – it’ll be in the back of your car in no time.
  4. Mix – I love it, that I’ll be walking looking at beds, and all of a sudden… I see an extension cable. Why would I need an extension cable? – maybe because I can plug several things that need charging overnight near my bed? – oh look… this bed side table I was looking at, can store everything I want an on top, there’s space for my mobile phone… Do I have enough sockets… I think I should buy one to give me that flexibility. And there you go – there was a reason I picked up that blue/yellow bag at the front of the store – to pick up little items that might make my life easier.

I think I could write a book about this – in fact, I’m sure someone has already!

The other final note was – Ikea Family. Not clubcard, not Nectar points, not anything like that… not even loyalty card… but Ikea Family card. That’s right, You’re part of the family. And family support each other.

So, there you go… so much we can learn from Ikea to incorporate into our organisations, into our companies and places of work…

… and yes, I didn’t even mention the hot dogs. That’s a whole blog post on it’s own!

Mothers Day 2019…

It’s fast approaching – Mothers Day in the UK is on the 31st March 2019.

I’ll be appearing on BBC Radio Nottingham on the evening of 24th around 7pm, to discuss the usual technology subjects – but also… to share my top 3 presents for Mothers Day!

Now – whilst I’ll be sharing them, I’ve found an additional 3 that I thought I’d share with you in advance – because then it provides you with enough time to go online – buy – have it delivered – wrap it up and make it that perfect present!

Okay – first up! – We have a Robotic Vacuum!

Let’s be honest – who enjoys doing the vacuum? – Exactly! With prices dropping on the robotic vacuums – my pick is the Mamibot ProVac Plus 2!

Small – but very good! – Gets going around the place and picks up the dust and dirt from your floors!

Coming in at a reasonable £69 – it’s alot cheaper than the bigger mightier versions but allows you to experience what it’ll be like for a robot doing the vacuum! – (Yes – robots are taking over!!)

In at Number 2…. a Vase for the Flowers you’ll buy.

But not any old vase – this is a smartphone holding vase!

So – not only could your mother look at the lovely flowers you’ve bought – but also the messages you’ll be sending her….

You can pick these up for £25 – £50, and you can also get ones for tablets!

That’s right – for when mum is in the kitchen cooking!!

And Finally… a little expensive, but Mum’s are worth it – a Digital Kettle!

I’m sure you’ve already bought her an amazon echo or google home – and/or her smartphone is connected to devices around the home.

This then makes the perfect addition.

That’s right – sit in the living room, and tell Alexa to turn the kettle on is not a dream or a fantasy…. it’s reality.

If Mum prefers a coffee… you could invest in a smart coffee machine!

Again – all connected and compatible to the latest devices.

The kettle comes in at around £130 – so not cheap…. but then, this digital world we live in – we must take advantage of it!

As mentioned – I have another 3 gift ideas for Mothers Day which I’ll share on Sunday – so watch out for that also!

Smart Blinds…

I’ll be honest. I wasn’t expecting that much feedback on the ‘Smart Dining Table’! – it was phenomenal!!

“Bal – really? You don’t need a table to be smart. Just be practical!”

“How’s about not having devices on the table – as per the news headlines.”

But my favourite was from my old friend, Hugh… who said “Sensors to detect food and keep plates warm would be progress. However, the purpose of a dining table is to not only enjoy your food, but hopefully engage in conversation with good company. Rather than a wireless charger, perhaps a Faraday layer to block the use of phones?”

That is very true, Hugh. The purpose of the dining table is indeed, to enjoy your food – however, no issue with it being a little smart, right?

So, on Sunday morning – when I was up, I was kindly asked to open the blinds. With a slight roll of the eyes… I did as I was told. I opened the blinds.

Which then got me thinking… Why haven’t I got Smart Blinds?

Is there such a thing, Bal?

YES! – There is!! Ikea!!! They have introduced Smart Blinds… watch the video below… it explains it…

That’s right – you can pop down to your local Ikea. Not only pick up a hotdog… but either the Kadrilj or the Fyrtur Smart Blind!

How awesome is that! – Runs on batteries, connects to your Alexa or Google Home… and you’re up and running!

Now, I will talk more about how Ikea is becoming ‘Smart’ about their home offerings in another blog post.

Back to the blinds. So, this got me thinking… they got to be expensive, right? – Well… not really….

Now… the problem is… I’ve already got blinds fitted.

Do I have to really change all the blinds in the house?

Well.. the answer is No!

That’s right Ladies and Gentlemen… you can retro-fit a device that’ll make your current blinds… SMART!

I know right – I should become a Smart Home Expert!

Manually pulling that string to open or close your blinds will be a thing of the past….

You can buy a device… which has a battery (which lasts for 2 months, and can be charged for a short period of time – or you can leave the charger in – or you can use a solar panel to charge it)… it connects to your phone… it connects to your Alexa or Google Home… and will open and close your blinds for you!

How awesome is this! All the blinds in my home.. can now be Smart!

The only problem is…. some of these devices are new and expensive. The one in the above photo is £130 per device.. but you can buy 2 for £180 and there’s various other promotions on. The more you buy, the cheaper it is…

So there you go… Bal helping your home become smarter. Hugh, what do you think now hey?! 🙂
