Bal's Friday Thought

Bal’s Friday Thought…

Quite a deep one today.

Mainly reflecting on a few things – personal, professional and one that has been hurting me for a few days. Well, since Wednesday night. Since, Nottingham Forest – who’d been in the Top 6 of the Championship since 26th December… fell to 7th place (and out of the play off places) at the 91st minute of the last game of the season.

My heart broke.

But – having reflected (and gone through the change curve) I strongly believe… that if certain things remain in place – and we improve on our weak areas, we will grow.

Growth in general – is uncomfortable. Because, if you are comfortable – are you learning and growing?

Bal’s Friday Thought…

I usually share a few ‘business’ related items on my social media… like how certain individuals didn’t give up, how some people really made good use of their entrepreneurial talent…. and how we continue to learn and evolve.

Today’s Friday Thought goes to those who have experience. Sometimes, it may not show immediately… but underneath… somewhere, there’s a plan… and it might be not evident to you – but it is to them!

Are you testing and learning?

So… you want to come to the first Think Lean and Get Digital Workshop?

You should! – It’ll not only be informative, educational and fun… but you’ll be taking away a lot more than you bargain for! – Yes there is a charge for it… and I can inform you now, your Return On Investment will pay dividends!

Okay – one thing I will talk about is innovation. I’ll explain how important it is to test and learn.

Yes, that’s all great Bal, but have you got any real life examples?

Yes. Yes I do.

Recently, the fast food chain, KFC cause a massive stir on Social Media.

That’s right. Because of the above. Someone took a photo of this banner in Glasgow, and shared it on Social Media. Before you knew it, it went viral and people were sharing it, liking it and talking about it.

80 piece popcorn bucket for £5.99 is a bargain. Well and truly a bargain. So much so… it’s a deal that many would take up in an instant!

Now, what’s this got to do with ‘innovation’ or ‘test and learn’.

Because later on in the day, KFC put this message out…

That’s right. KFC were testing it out in 10 restaurants in Glasgow – and seeing how it went – would do a nationwide release.

2 things here…

  1. They’re testing the market – yes, 10 restaurants… yes, in Glasgow… yes it’s only for a short period of time – but the key thing is to test. Now as this got out to the rest of the country and the world – KFC knew they were onto a winner.
  2. What’s the worse that could happen? – people don’t buy it… some people even made funny comments such as “are they actually going to count the 80 lol”. To be fair, I thought that’s a great comment. How are they going to actually ensure there’s 80 in each on. Obviously it’ll be done at the factory and pre-packaged… no?

So… test and learn. Give it a go – educated go…. see what the customers say, and if there’s hunger for it (no pun intended) they’ll let you know. But the important thing is… you’ll learn from it!

Finally… You can learn too!

Many folk have suggested… ‘Bal, why don’t you hold some workshops, or events where we can learn a little more from you about digital and this thing called, lean, which you’re always going on about’.

Okay. I will. Here you go folks –

I’m going to finally do it. Will have my first workshop around Christmas time, focussing on a few ‘Lean’ subjects – mainly centred around the customer. And then how digital can pay huge dividends for you – and why it’s important to innovate.

Will share more details soon – if you are interested, please reach out to me, and I’ll put your name on the list. Only going to have 20 in the first workshop – and I’ll let you know the cost.

Bal’s Friday Thought…

Ever wondered how your life will pan out.

If you had to read a book about your life… how would it go? Would it be predictable or would it be adventurous?….

Got an Idea… but not the brains!

Recently, on Twitter… someone was saying, how they want/need more money… so I replied, I’ve got a few ideas, could make them work.

…Don’t have the brains. Fair enough, you may not have the knowledge right now, but to make a business or startup work, you need passion.

That’s where success comes from. Passion.

Brains… well, you can learn as you go along. You can learn on the job. You can learn from others. What the heck… you can even learn from various YouTube videos that are available!!

The ‘I don’t have the brains’ bit… I don’t believe. Not picking on Claire… there could be a whole host of other things that are preventing her from starting her own little business… but I do hear this a lot from other folk.

The usual comment is…

I don’t know how.

Do you think Bill Gates knew everything to get Microsoft going?

Do you think Steve Jobs knew everything to get Apple going?

No. But they learnt. They had a passion to get started and then they learnt. They ‘collaborated’. They worked with others. Microsoft and Apple both had co-founders. You could argue, they were the brains behind the company!

Bal… what happens if you’re not really passionate about anything?

Then find a hobby. Choose something that interests you. Something that’ll keep you occupied. Something that you’ll look forward to. Try different things…. You’ll find something you enjoy, and then you can become passionate about it.

We are living in an ever changing world…. it’s becoming easier to get a start-up going. Easy to talk and collaborate with others… local universities have days/evenings where you can pop along and meet others. There’s also meetup… app/website where you can find other like-minded people, who may be meeting up… and meet up… and talk…. and share ideas… and learn from them.

So there you go… want to earn some more money? Become passionate… Learn and use those skills. Because we all know… skills pay bills.

Why everyone needs a Mentor…

If you’ve read a little about me, you’ll know, I started my career at Kodak.

That’s right, Eastman Kodak, the giants of Photography…

Well, when I joined Kodak, I joined on the graduate scheme. I had a mentor, and at the time, she was ok. She gave me advice but I was fairly strong minded back then, that I listened but was insistent on doing what I had in my mind and wanted to do.

It was only when I joined a small team on the Harrow, UK site.. who were doing some lean activities. And it was within this team, I met my ‘real’ mentor.

Mark Chamberlain. He’d come from Toyota. Knew vast amounts about Lean. But the key thing was, he never taught me. He always took me with him to Gemba and various site walks. Showed me, asked me questions, but never told me the answers. I had to figure them out myself.

Yes he guided me, and taught me some of the lean principles… but it was the simple things that I learnt from him.

For example… we had a cupboard for our overalls. All the overalls were white. But they had our names on the inside. So… when you’d open the cupboard, you’d spend a minute or so, looking for your overall amongst all the others.

One day, I opened the cupboard, and there was a bright red sticker on one of the hangers. It was Mark’s. I thought, why’s he done that. Didn’t ask… just spent some time looking for my coat, found it and left.

Later that day, I was sat at my desk, and saw Mark go to the cupboard. he opened it, and immediately, got his coat and walked away.

It was at that moment, the penny dropped.

Visual controls. He opened the cupboard. Saw a red sticker. Immediately knew where his coat was, got it and went. No time wasted.

Genius.

I want to learn from this guy.

And so I did. During my time at Kodak, I kept on learning.

There were various instances, where we’d walk into a room which had boxes and some scales, and he’d ask me what I saw… and i’d tell him. He wouldn’t say anything. Which at times frustrated me. Then a few weeks later, we’d walk into that same room, and this time… I said, I see inventory… I see… and he paused me. Smiled. And we both walked away.

I’ve kept in touch with Mark. Often reach out for advice, not as often as i’d like… but I know he’s there.

And that’s my story about my mentor.

So, why do you need one?

Well… someone to guide you. Someone to show you. Someone to not give you the answers… but someone to ensure you will achieve the best you can.

Where do you find a mentor? Well… start by looking within your company, your organisation or network.

If there’s someone you look up to… ask them. You could be in the music industry, and look up to some musicians… ask them. What’s the worse that could happen? – they say no… then you either keep asking… or find someone else you look up to. Either way, if you can find someone to show you…. you’ll learn so much… and that’s only a good thing in your journey.

Bal’s Friday Thought…

Following on from my thought last week… Warren has some great quotes and this one I love to share with younger folk.
